TASAC TRAINS ENUMERATORS FOR MARITIME TRANSPORT AND SHIPBUILDING CENSUS

The Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC), in collaboration with the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), today, September 28, 2026, conducted training for enumerators who will participate in the Census of Water Transport Vessels and Shipbuilders in Mainland Tanzania.

The training aimed to prepare the enumerators by equipping them with the knowledge and skills required to collect accurate, reliable and standardised information during the implementation of the census exercise.

Speaking on behalf of the Director General of TASAC, the Director of Economic Regulation, Mr. Nahson Sigalla, said the census is important in helping the Government obtain accurate statistics on the number, types, uses and locations of water transport vessels, as well as shipbuilders and repairers of ships and other water transport vessels in the country.

Mr. Sigalla urged the enumerators to conduct the exercise with professionalism, integrity and diligence, while ensuring that the information collected is accurate, complete and complies with established procedures and guidelines. He also stressed the importance of engaging stakeholders and vessel owners to ensure that all necessary information is obtained, enabling TASAC to establish an accurate database to support planning and development of the maritime transport sector.

The two-day training covered various areas, including how to identify and enumerate owners and operators of water transport vessels, collection of vessel information, the use of digital tools in data collection, and ways of addressing challenges that may arise during the census exercise.

The census is expected to be conducted in various areas across Mainland Tanzania from October 1 to 30, 2026. It will involve the collection of information on water transport vessels, shipbuilders, and ship and water transport vessel repairers, with the aim of establishing an accurate database to support planning, regulation and development of the maritime transport sector.
