TANESCO OUTLINES MEASURES TO ADDRESS POTENTIAL IMPACTS OF EL NIÑO RAINS

📌 Urges the public to take precautions when using electricity during the rainy season

The Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) has outlined various measures being implemented to address the potential impacts of the El Niño rains expected to begin soon, including strengthening electricity infrastructure and educating the public on safe electricity use during the rainy season.

TANESCO said the measures are aimed at ensuring that electricity services remain available safely and reliably, while members of the public take precautions against potential risks that may arise during the rainy season.

The remarks were made during special interviews with various TANESCO experts aired on different radio and television programmes, aimed at educating the public about TANESCO’s preparations and strategies to address potential impacts resulting from the rains.

Speaking on the 360 programme aired by Clouds Media, TANESCO Director of Communications and Customer Services, Ms Irene Gowelle, said the Company was continuing with various measures to strengthen electricity infrastructure in order to minimise potential impacts during the El Niño rains.

“Currently, TANESCO is conducting inspections and strengthening electricity infrastructure in various areas across the country, including replacing damaged poles with stronger ones, inspecting the condition of electricity cables, and cutting trees that are close to or touching power lines,” Ms Gowelle said.

She added that TANESCO was also inspecting power receiving and transformer substations, as well as the surroundings of the infrastructure, in a move aimed at ensuring that the electricity supply system remains safe during the rainy season.

For his part, TANESCO Occupational Health and Safety Manager, Engineer Fred Kayega, said water and metallic objects can facilitate the flow of electricity, urging members of the public to exercise greater caution during rains and floods.

“We urge members of the public not to touch fallen electricity wires, especially during rains or floods. They should keep away from the area and report the incident to TANESCO so that our experts can arrive and take immediate action,” Engineer Kayega said.

TANESCO continues to urge members of the public to cooperate with the Company by reporting promptly any unsafe electricity infrastructure, including poles, hanging or fallen wires, as well as trees that appear to be touching electricity wires or poles, so that immediate action can be taken.
