WMA: TANZANIA’S KILOGRAM AND LITRE ARE THE SAME AS THOSE USED WORLDWIDE
By WMA – MWANZA
The Manager of the Weights and Measures Agency (WMA) in Geita Region, Ms. Eva Ikula, has said that proper enforcement of accurate measurement standards by WMA has helped Tanzanian products gain greater trust and acceptance in international markets.
Speaking to journalists today, August 31, 2026, at the WMA pavilion during the ongoing East African Trade Exhibition at Furahisha Grounds in Mwanza, Ms. Ikula said one of the major reasons Tanzanian products are accepted in international markets is the reliability of measurements.
“Our kilogram is the same kilogram used in Kenya, India and Germany. That is the strength of using accurate measurements,” she said.
She said WMA continues to provide public education through various campaigns to raise awareness that “Accurate measurement is the passport for your product to enter any market in the world.”
Ms. Ikula explained that international buyers have confidence in Tanzania because WMA uses the globally recognized International System of Units (SI Units).
“The result is simple. When a contract is signed in London, Beijing or Johannesburg, they know that a kilogram in Tanzania is the same as a kilogram in their country,” she said.
She concluded by emphasizing that WMA is not only concerned with kilograms and litres, but also with building trust.
“When we sell using accurate measurements, we sell with dignity. And the world respects those who sell with dignity,” she said.
The East African Trade Exhibition began on August 28 and is expected to conclude on September 6, 2026. The exhibition is being held under the theme: “Security and Peace as a Catalyst for Trade and Investment.”
