WMA Inspects Measurement Accuracy at Roofing Sheet Factories in Mwanza
The Weights and Measures Agency (WMA) in Mwanza Region has urged companies involved in the production of roofing sheets to comply with measurement laws and established quality standards in order to protect consumers’ rights and money.
Speaking on August 27, 2026, shortly after conducting a surprise inspection at several roofing sheet manufacturing factories in Mwanza, WMA Mwanza Regional Manager Karim Zuberi said the agency had, through inspections and information provided by members of the public, identified and taken action against five manufacturers found to be producing roofing sheets with inaccurate measurements this year.
Zuberi urged consumers to be vigilant when purchasing roofing sheets and to report to the relevant authorities whenever they suspect that they have been sold products with inaccurate measurements. He also called on traders to stop misleading customers about the thickness of roofing sheets.
He explained that some traders have been giving customers incorrect information by making them believe that a higher “Gauge” number means a thicker and better-quality roofing sheet. In fact, the opposite is true—the lower the Gauge number, the thicker the roofing sheet.
He further stressed the importance of consumers obtaining accurate information about the standards and specifications of products they purchase to avoid fraud and financial losses, particularly when constructing homes and other infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Biyolelo Ndaisaba, one of the officials of a company involved in manufacturing roofing sheets in Mwanza, said cheating consumers through inaccurate measurements amounts to undermining the hard-earned money of people who spend their resources building homes and developing other activities.
Ndaisaba said their company has continued to lead in ensuring compliance with legally required measurement standards, stressing that all manufacturers have a responsibility to ensure that products released onto the market meet the required standards for the benefit of consumers.
The WMA Mwanza Regional Office continues to conduct inspections of various products through both routine and surprise inspections as part of efforts to protect consumers from products that do not meet the required measurement standards.
