“TRANSPORT RESEARCH SHOULD PROVIDE SOLUTIONS AND DRIVE ECONOMIC GROWTH” – PROF. MBARAWA

The Minister for Transport, Prof. Makame Mbarawa, has urged researchers in Tanzania to ensure that studies conducted in the transport and logistics sector provide practical solutions to real challenges and contribute to economic development, rather than remaining in reports and conference discussions.

Speaking while opening the Fourth International Conference on Transport, Logistics and Management today, August 20, 2026, at Mlimani City Conference Centre in Dar es Salaam, Prof. Mbarawa said the Government needs research that will help reduce transportation costs, improve the efficiency of ports and railways, enhance safety and strengthen infrastructure capable of withstanding the impacts of climate change.

He said the Government continues to invest in the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), ports, Air Tanzania (ATCL), Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), roads and water transport, stressing the importance of integrating these systems to establish an efficient and interconnected transport network that reduces the cost and time involved in moving passengers and cargo.

“The economy should not grow first and have transport follow afterwards. Transport itself must be a driver of economic growth, while transport infrastructure should create opportunities for business, employment and investment,” Prof. Mbarawa emphasized.

Prof. Mbarawa also urged conference participants to present practical recommendations with measurable outcomes, stressing that the success of research should be reflected in lower transportation costs, increased efficiency, improved safety and enhanced Tanzania’s competitiveness in regional and international markets.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Board of the National Institute of Transport (NIT), Prof. Ulingeta Mbamba, emphasized the importance of research and innovation in addressing challenges facing the transport sector.

The NIT Rector, Dr. Prosper Mgaya, said the institution will continue strengthening research, innovation and collaboration with stakeholders from within and outside the country.

The two-day conference, taking place on August 20 and 21, 2026, is being held under the theme: “Towards Smart, Environmentally Friendly, Integrated and Resilient Transport Systems.” It brings together researchers, experts, policymakers, government officials and sector stakeholders from Tanzania and abroad.
