Tanzania Supports Innovative Nuclear Technologies Through ATLAS Programme

Minister for Energy and Vice President-designate, Hon. Deogratius Ndejembi, has commended the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for its efforts to facilitate the launch of the Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea (ATLAS) Programme, describing the initiative as an important step towards advancing innovative nuclear technologies and expanding the use of nuclear energy globally.

Hon. Ndejembi made the remarks while speaking at the High-Level Launch Meeting of the ATLAS Programme, held on August 26–27, 2026, in Washington, D.C., United States.

He said the major transformations taking place in the global energy sector require countries to work together in finding solutions that will strengthen energy security, promote industrial development, address climate change, and ensure that citizens have access to reliable, affordable and sustainable energy.

Highlighting measures being undertaken by Tanzania to strengthen energy access, Hon. Ndejembi said the Government continues to implement a strategy based on a diversified energy mix, including hydropower, natural gas, solar, wind and other renewable energy sources.

He added that Tanzania is closely monitoring developments in innovative energy technologies, including nuclear technologies, with the aim of expanding opportunities for safe, reliable and sustainable energy access while driving economic and social development.
