President Samia Officially Inaugurates Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant
President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, today, August 22, 2026, officially inaugurated the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP), with an installed generation capacity of 2,115 megawatts, at the project site in Rufiji District, Coast Region.
Various leaders joined President Samia at the inauguration ceremony, including Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Ambassador Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi; Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba; Prime Minister of the Arab Republic of Egypt, H.E. Moustafa Madbouly; Minister for Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi; and other leaders.
The inauguration of JNHPP marks the culmination of the implementation of a major strategic project financed entirely through domestic funds from the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania. The project cost approximately TZS 7.452 trillion, equivalent to US$3.35 billion. Construction began in June 2019 and was completed in March 2025.
JNHPP has significantly increased Tanzania’s electricity generation capacity and strengthened the country’s energy security. Currently, the total installed electricity generation capacity in Tanzania stands at approximately 4,075 megawatts, with JNHPP alone contributing more than half of the country’s total generation capacity.
