MISS UNIVERSE TANZANIA PARTNERS WITH GOVERNMENT TO PROMOTE CLEAN COOKING ENERGY

Deputy Minister for Energy, Hon. Salome Makamba, has commended Miss Universe Tanzania contestants for their efforts to promote the use of clean cooking energy and raise public awareness of its importance across the country.

Hon. Salome said the Government will continue working with the Miss Universe Tanzania platform to promote the clean cooking energy agenda, urging all 33 contestants to become champions of the campaign and deliver accurate information to communities, particularly in rural areas.

She made the remarks on August 23, 2026, in Dar es Salaam during the Miss Universe Tanzania competition held at Ledger Plaza Hotel, where the number of contestants was reduced to 20 who will proceed to the next stage of the competition to select Tanzania’s representative at the Miss Universe global pageant.

She said the contestants’ participation in the clean cooking energy campaign provides an important opportunity to reach different groups within society and increase awareness of the benefits of using energy that is safe, affordable and environmentally friendly.

Hon. Salome noted that the Clean Cooking Energy Agenda, championed by President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, aims to ensure that at least 80 percent of Tanzanians use clean cooking energy by 2034.

She added that the use of clean cooking energy in Tanzania has increased from approximately six percent a few years ago to 28.6 percent currently.

Hon. Salome also commended Miss Universe Tanzania National Director, Millen Magese, for linking the pageant with the Clean Cooking Energy Agenda, while thanking sponsors supporting the initiative.

She further called on companies and other stakeholders to support the competition so that it can reach more women and expand the scope of public awareness efforts.

For her part, Ms. Magese said Miss Universe Tanzania has chosen to promote the clean cooking energy message in 2026 as part of its partnership with the Government to increase awareness and encourage the use of clean cooking energy across the country.

She emphasized that Miss Universe Tanzania will continue working with the Government and development partners to ensure that clean cooking energy remains part of the pageant every year, giving contestants an opportunity to become ambassadors for positive change in their communities.

During the competition, contestants had an opportunity to deliver various messages on clean cooking energy, emphasizing the importance of Tanzanians switching to cooking energy that is safe, affordable and environmentally friendly.

They pledged to continue using their platforms as ambassadors to educate and encourage communities to reduce reliance on polluting cooking fuels and contribute to achieving the country’s national clean cooking energy targets.
