Bolt Data: More Than 70% of Tanzanians Choose Affordable Ride Options as Premium Demand Grows

Dar es Salaam, 20 August 2026 —

New Bolt Tanzania mobility data shows that affordability has become an even stronger factor in how Tanzanians choose ride-hailing services, with more than 70% of all trips now booked through Bajaji and Bodaboda categories, as demand for higher-priced premium categories begins to soften.

The shift comes months after the Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA) introduced revised minimum fare guidelines in response to a 33.4% increase in fuel prices, leading to higher ride fares across all categories. While the adjustment was intended to protect driver earnings, it also widened the price gap between economy and premium services, prompting more riders to opt for affordable alternatives.

According to Bolt, higher-priced car categories such as Standard & XLhave experienced slower demand growth in recent months as cost-conscious consumers increasingly migrate to lower-cost options for their daily commuting needs.

Speaking on the trend, Dimmy Kanyankole, Senior General Manager, Bolt East Africa, said the data reflects changing consumer priorities rather than declining demand for ride-hailing.

"The recent fare adjustments have changed how many people think about everyday transport. Tanzanians still value convenience and safety, but affordability has been an even more important consideration. What we're seeing is not fewer people using ride-hailing, but more riders choosing the category that best matches their daily budget."

He added that offering multiple ride categories enables passengers to make transport choices that reflect their financial circumstances while ensuring drivers continue earning sustainably under the current regulatory framework.

Bolt says the trend highlights the importance of maintaining a diverse mobility ecosystem where different ride categories cater to varying customer needs. As transport costs continue to evolve, the company remains committed to expanding affordable mobility options while preserving quality, safety and reliability across its platform.
