PRESIDENT DR. MWINYI: SOCIAL MEDIA SHOULD SERVE AS A PLATFORM TO SPEAK FOR THE GOVERNMENT AND BUILD PUBLIC TRUST
The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, H.E. Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has urged ministers and senior government officials from both the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar to adopt modern communication strategies in disseminating information and strengthening engagement between the Government and the public. He emphasized that social media should be used to promote government policies and serve the public interest rather than personal agendas.
President Dr. Mwinyi made the remarks today, July 29, 2026, while officiating the closing ceremony of a two-day orientation seminar for Ministers, Deputy Ministers, and Permanent Secretaries from the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar. The seminar was held at the Golden Tulip Airport Hotel in Zanzibar.
He called on government leaders to make effective use of both local and international media to explain government policies, plans, and implementation, educate the public, and counter misinformation. He also stressed the importance of thorough preparation before addressing the public.
The President noted that communication is a vital tool for building public understanding and trust, strengthening the Government’s image, and guiding public discourse. He urged leaders to carefully consider both the messages they communicate and their conduct across various communication platforms.
Dr. Mwinyi said the seminar had enhanced participants' understanding of the ongoing transformation in government communication, including technological advancements, the growing role of social media and artificial intelligence, shifts in global politics, and the changing expectations of today's audiences, particularly young people.
On the Union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar, he said the seminar had deepened leaders’ understanding of its principles and significance. He encouraged them to continue promoting messages that foster national unity, strengthen cooperation between the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, and uphold the Union as the foundation of a strong nation.
President Dr. Mwinyi also commended the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, for her vision and directive to organize the seminar, saying it had equipped government leaders with better communication skills, strengthened accountability, and contributed to the implementation of the Tanzania Development Vision 2050.
