Minister for Energy, Hon. Deogratius Ndejembi, has officially inaugurated the 33kV electricity transmission line from Masasi to Newala, describing the project as part of the Government’s ongoing efforts to improve reliable electricity access and create an enabling environment for economic growth in Newala District.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Hon. Ndejembi said the Sixth Phase Government, under the leadership of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, continues to invest in strategic electricity infrastructure projects to ensure reliable energy services reach more citizens and accelerate socio-economic development.
“This transmission line is a foundation for economic growth, increased productivity, attracting investment, and improving electricity reliability in Newala District,” said Hon. Ndejembi.
He added that the Government will continue ensuring that Lindi and Mtwara regions receive reliable electricity, including connecting the two regions more comprehensively to the National Grid.
Representing the Mtwara Regional Commissioner, the Newala District Commissioner, Hon. Mwangi Kundya, said the Government has continued implementing major development projects across Mtwara Region.
“Honourable Minister, I congratulate the Government because all 785 villages in Mtwara Region now have access to electricity,” he said.
He further noted that, to improve customer services, TANESCO in Mtwara has received additional operational equipment, including 11 vehicles, four three-wheelers (bajajs), and nine motorcycles.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy, Eng. Felchesmi Mramba, said the Government has continued investing in electricity infrastructure in Mtwara and Lindi to meet growing demand.
“Electricity demand in Lindi and Mtwara continues to increase, and the Government has invested in power generation. Mtwara Region is now generating more than 50 megawatts of electricity,” said Eng. Mramba.
Earlier, presenting the project implementation report, TANESCO Managing Director, Mr. Lazaro Twange, said the 76-kilometre transmission line from Masasi to Newala was constructed at a cost of TZS 4.56 billion.
“Before this project, Newala District received electricity from Mtwara through Nanyumbu over a distance of about 170 kilometres, which contributed to frequent power outages,” said Mr. Twange.
He explained that completion of the new transmission line has significantly improved electricity reliability and eliminated frequent power interruptions in the district.
Additionally, the Government, through TANESCO, has allocated approximately TZS 5.27 billion for the construction of a switching station, which will further enhance electricity reliability and meet the current and future energy needs of residents and investors in Newala District.
On behalf of Members of Parliament from Mtwara Region, Newala Rural MP Dr. Yahaya Nawanda commended the Government for its continued investment in strengthening electricity services across the region.
