KISHAPU SOLAR POWER PHASE II TO ADD 100MW OF RENEWABLE ENERGY TO TANZANIA'S GRID

The Government of Tanzania, through the Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO), has taken another major step toward expanding the country's electricity generation capacity after signing the implementation contract for Phase II of the Kishapu Solar Power Project, which will produce 100 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy.

The signing follows the successful completion of Phase I, which generates 50MW and has already been connected to the National Grid, strengthening grid stability and improving electricity supply across the country.

Speaking during the signing ceremony on July 27, 2026, the Minister for Energy, Hon. Deogratius Ndejembi, said the energy sector remains a key pillar of Tanzania's development agenda. He noted that the government continues to diversify electricity generation sources through an energy mix strategy to reduce dependence on a single source.

"Communities in this area previously depended on electricity transmitted over long distances. The completion of this project will make Tanzania's power system more secure and position the country as a model in climate-resilient electricity generation," said Hon. Ndejembi.

The Minister also thanked the French Development Agency (AFD) for its continued partnership with the Government of Tanzania through concessional financing, saying the support reflects the confidence development partners have in Tanzania's management and implementation of strategic infrastructure projects.

He further commended TANESCO for successfully overseeing major electricity projects that are transforming the country's energy sector and urged the utility to closely monitor every stage of Phase II to ensure it is completed on schedule for the benefit of Tanzanians.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals, Hon. Subira Mgalu, said the project demonstrates the Ministry of Energy's commitment to allocating 97 percent of its budget to development projects.

"This contract signing is a result of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan's successful diplomacy, which has strengthened the confidence of development partners in supporting Tanzania's electricity generation, transmission, and distribution projects. We are confident Tanzania will continue to enjoy adequate electricity supply," she said.

The Vice Chairperson of the TANESCO Board of Directors, Ambassador Zuhura Bundala, noted that the Board closely supervised the implementation of Phase I and was satisfied that the project delivered value for money. She described the signing of Phase II as another significant milestone in the project's success.

For his part, TANESCO Managing Director Lazaro Twange said the entire 150MW Kishapu Solar Power Project is estimated to cost approximately TSh 323 billion. Of this amount, Phase I (50MW) cost about TSh 118.6 billion, while Phase II (100MW) is expected to cost approximately TSh 204.4 billion.

"The project will be implemented over a period of 17 months through a partnership between the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, represented by TANESCO, and the French Development Agency (AFD), which has provided concessional financing," Twange explained.

The implementation contract was signed between TANESCO and a consortium comprising Sagemcom Energy, Telecom SAS of France and STEG International Services of Tunisia.
