MD TWANGE EXPLAINS CAUSE OF NATIONAL POWER GRID FAILURE

📌 Apologizes to customers and the public, assures continued reliable electricity supply

📌 Says power generation has reached 4,400MW as efforts to strengthen the National Grid continue

The Managing Director of the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), Mr. Lazaro Twange, has apologized to the public and all electricity customers following the disruption that occurred on the National Power Grid on June 27, 2026, which resulted in power outages across various parts of the country.

Speaking to journalists in Dar es Salaam on June 28, 2026, Mr. Twange said preliminary investigations conducted during the restoration process revealed that the nationwide outage was caused by simultaneous faults in three electricity transmission lines and one power generation unit.

He explained that the National Power Grid is an integrated system that connects electricity generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure. As such, a major fault in one part of the system can affect the entire grid, leading to widespread power interruptions across the country.

"We recognize the inconvenience caused to our customers and the public by this incident, and we sincerely apologize. Our technical teams worked tirelessly, day and night, to restore electricity services as quickly and safely as possible," Mr. Twange said.

Despite the incident, he emphasized that Tanzania's power generation remains stable, with the country's installed generation capacity now reaching approximately 4,400 megawatts, which is sufficient to meet current national demand.

"We urge the public to continue having confidence in TANESCO. As we expand electricity generation, we are also investing in strengthening the National Grid to improve system reliability and minimize the likelihood of similar incidents in the future. Our commitment is to ensure Tanzanians continue receiving reliable, safe, and sustainable electricity services," he added.

Mr. Twange further stated that TANESCO is implementing several strategic initiatives to enhance the resilience of the National Grid by upgrading electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure. These improvements are intended to reduce the risk of similar disruptions and ensure that economic and social activities continue without interruption.

He assured the public that TANESCO will continue providing timely and accurate information regarding electricity services while strengthening communication and customer relations to improve service delivery nationwide.

In addition, Mr. Twange noted that the utility will continue collaborating with various development partners to modernize Tanzania's power systems and ensure citizens receive reliable, safe, and sustainable electricity services.
