Thousands of residents from Mbagala and its suburbs in Temeke Municipality, Dar es Salaam, turned up in large numbers yesterday to have their eyes examined, receive counseling, and access free treatment services provided by CCBRT Hospital.
The eye care services and counseling are part of CCBRT’s ongoing program aimed at combating and eliminating eye problems among Tanzanians and preventing avoidable blindness.
“We are very pleased to see such a large turnout of people coming for eye examinations, counseling, and free treatment,” said the Chief Officer for Community Development and Research, Ms. Rhoda Ndakwe. She added that the demand for these services is high, as reflected by the number of attendees.
Ms. Rhoda, who represented the Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Brenda Msangi, stated that CCBRT has established a system to provide eye care and counseling services to help communities avoid eye disabilities, including blindness.
She also acknowledged the role of the Christian Blind Mission (CBM), which partnered with CCBRT to make the initiative successful. She called on more stakeholders to support such initiatives in order to reach more people in need across the country. She also expressed gratitude to various donors, including CBM and Light for the World (LFTW).
“Through collaboration with various partners, CCBRT aims to provide essential eye care services, including early detection of conditions such as glaucoma and cataracts. That is why we organize camps like these,” she said.
“We want to identify these conditions early and ensure that patients receive timely treatment,” she added, emphasizing that CCBRT remains committed to preventing eye disabilities among Tanzanians.
CCBRT Hospital is among the few specialized hospitals in the country offering a wide range of services, including eye care, fistula treatment, kidney care and dialysis, orthopedic services, maternal and gynecological care, surgery, radiology, and many others.
