KAPALATA URGES STAMICO TO COMPETE INTERNATIONALLY AND JOIN THE GLOBAL MINING VALUE CHAIN

International mining, exploration and mineral valuation expert, and a Member of the Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals of the 13th Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Neto Paul Kapalata, has urged the State Mining Corporation (STAMICO) to establish an international strategy that will enable it to participate in the global mining value chain and compete with major international mining companies, including Barrick Gold Corporation and AngloGold Ashanti, in line with the Ministry of Minerals’ Vision 2030 agenda.

Speaking during the second meeting of the Standing Committee, held today, January 16, 2026, at the Pius Msekwa Hall, Parliament Buildings in Dodoma, Hon. Kapalata said STAMICO has every reason to position itself institutionally, technologically and financially to become a major player in the mining sector at international standards. He noted that such a move would increase its contribution to the Government and society at large, instead of focusing mainly on investing in the provision of professional mining services, which are largely reserved for local participants under the local content framework.

He emphasized that his extensive experience in the mining sector, both locally and internationally, will be fully utilized through the committee to help build a competitive, efficient and strong STAMICO capable of directly participating in large-scale mining projects, rather than remaining limited to small-scale operations.

In another development, Hon. Kapalata commended the Ministry of Minerals for the significant progress made in strengthening the mining sector, noting that improvements in policies, laws and sector governance have yielded substantial results compared to many other African countries.

He further pledged to continue providing professional advice and support through the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals to ensure the sector continues to grow and contribute effectively to the national GDP and sustainable sector development.

On her part, the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals, Hon. Subira Mgalu, praised Hon. Kapalata for his valuable professional input, saying that such ideas are crucial in the process of building a strong STAMICO that delivers broad benefits to the Government, society and the national economy as a whole.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Minerals, Hon. Anthony Mavunde, commended Hon. Kapalata for sharing his vast local and international experience in the mining sector and assured that the Ministry of Minerals will work on the advice provided, with the aim of strengthening STAMICO and enabling it to actively participate in large-scale mining both nationally and internationally.
