MWANZA PRECIOUS METALS REFINERY COLLECTS OVER 5 TONS OF GOLD ON BEHALF OF BOT

The Mwanza Precious Metals Refinery (MPMR), located in Mwanza City, has successfully collected more than five tons of gold on behalf of the Bank of Tanzania (BOT).


This was revealed by the Mwanza Regional Mining Officer, Engineer Nyaisara Mgaya, while addressing a delegation from Malawi that visited the region to learn about the management and operation of the mineral trade, particularly Tanzania’s mineral market system.


Eng. Mgaya explained that the refinery has the capacity to process up to 960 kilograms of gold per day. However, at present it operates machines capable of refining 480 kilograms per day due to the availability of raw materials.


During the meeting, the leader of the Malawian delegation, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Institute in Malawi, Zizwan Khonje, expressed gratitude to the Mwanza Regional Mining Officer for the knowledge shared on Tanzania’s mineral trade and marketing system.


“Tanzania is a model for East Africa, thanks to the various measures it has taken to improve the mining sector, including the establishment of open mineral markets and the use of digital systems in resource management,” Khonje stated.


Earlier, the delegation had the opportunity to visit the Mwanza Regional Commissioner’s Office, where they were officially received by the Regional Administrative Secretary, Mr. Balandya Elikana.


The Malawian delegation’s visit is expected to inspire reforms in Malawi’s mining sector by strengthening transparency systems, increasing government revenues, and enabling small-scale miners to participate in the international mineral market.

*Government Launches 15274 Hotline to Ease Access to National ID Information

Dar es Salaam: The Government has urged citizens to use their mobile phones by dialing *15274 to easily access information related to National Identification Cards (NIDA). Speaking today, December 29, 2025, the Minister for Home Affairs, George Simbachawene, said the service will enable citizens to check the status of their National ID cards, including whether the card has been produced or not, with feedback provided within five days. He explained that through this number, citizens will receive important information regarding their National IDs, adding that damaged ID cards are expected to be replaced starting February 2026. “By using this number, you will be able to get information on whether your ID card has been produced. I emphasize that damaged ID cards will be issued in February 2026,” said Minister Simbachawene.
