President Samia to Launch Kwala Dry Port and Modern Freight Train Services.
The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, is expected to be the guest of honor at the official inauguration of the Kwala Dry Port and the launch of modern Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) freight train services between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma.
Speaking to the media in Dar es Salaam, the Minister for Transport, Prof. Makame Mbarawa (MP), said the event will take place on July 31, 2025, at Kwala in the Pwani Region. The ceremony will also include the reception of new and refurbished wagons for the Central Line (Meter Gauge Railway – MGR).
Prof. Mbarawa explained that the Kwala Dry Port, constructed in Vigwaza about 90 km from Dar es Salaam, has the capacity to handle 823 containers per day (approximately 339,500 annually), equivalent to 30% of the Dar es Salaam Port’s container traffic. The site was chosen due to its strategic location and government-owned land free from disputes.
He further noted that SGR freight services officially commenced on June 27, 2025, after successful trials, reducing the cargo transit time between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma from 16 hours to just 4 hours. Companies such as Azania Group and Dangote Cement are already benefiting from the service.
The government is also modernizing the old railway (MGR) by acquiring 50 new wagons and refurbishing 20, to increase freight capacity and boost the national economy.
According to Prof. Mbarawa, these projects will reduce congestion at the port and on roads, enhance the competitiveness of Dar es Salaam Port, lower accidents and transportation costs, and promote employment and trade in neighboring regions.
He urged citizens and stakeholders in the transport sector to attend the launch and seize the economic opportunities arising from these national projects.
Meanwhile, the TPA Director General, Mr. Plasduce Mbosa, said the authority is committed to delivering world-class services at the Kwala Dry Port. TRC’s Director General, Eng. Machibya Shiwa, added that TRC will continue collaborating with partners to strengthen rail transport services in Tanzania.
