POWER TRANSMISSION LINE FROM JULIUS NYERERE HYDROPOWER PLANT TO DODOMA VIA CHALINZE COMPLETED – MRAMBA
📌 JNHPP electricity to reach Dodoma through Chalinze
📌 SGR to have a dedicated power transmission line, strengthening service reliability
Dodoma.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy responsible for Electricity and Renewable Energy, Engineer Felchesmi Mramba, has said that the 400-kilovolt (kV) power transmission line from Chalinze to Dodoma has been completed, paving the way for electricity generated at the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant (JNHPP) to reach Dodoma through Chalinze.
Mramba made the statement today, August 18, 2026, while inspecting the final stages of the 345-kilometre Chalinze–Dodoma Power Transmission Line Project, as well as the expansion of the Chalinze and Zuzu substations in Pwani Region and Dodoma City, respectively.
He said construction of the transmission line has reached 99 percent completion, while the expansion of the Zuzu Substation has reached 98 percent, with experts having completed preparations to begin energising and testing the line.
“The Zuzu Substation is now at the very final stage. Experts have informed me that they will begin trial energisation at the station. Electricity will start reaching Dodoma from the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant through Chalinze and onward to Dodoma,” Mramba said.
He said completion of the 400kV transmission line is an important milestone in strengthening Tanzania’s electricity transmission system, as it will receive electricity generated at the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant and transmit it from Chalinze to Dodoma, where it will be integrated into the national grid and distributed to various parts of the country.
Mramba further said that one of the major beneficiaries of the project will be the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR). He explained that the electricity transmission line currently used by the SGR is also shared with other electricity users. Once the Chalinze–Dodoma line becomes operational, other users will be shifted from the line serving the SGR, allowing the railway to have a dedicated electricity supply line for its operations.
He added that completion of the Chalinze–Dodoma transmission line will also help address challenges such as the recent national grid blackout. The project will improve grid stability and enhance the quality and reliability of electricity supply by increasing the availability of power within the national grid.
According to Mramba, the project is among the country’s strategic electricity projects and is being financed 100 percent by the Government of Tanzania, at an estimated cost of approximately TZS 600 billion. It is also among the largest electricity transmission projects currently being implemented in the country.
Mramba said regions expected to benefit from the transmission line include those in the Lake Zone, including Mwanza, Shinyanga, Tabora and Kigoma, as well as Singida in the western part of the country. In the northern zone, Manyara, Arusha and Kilimanjaro will also benefit from electricity transmitted through the line.
Mramba commended President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for enabling the implementation of the project, as well as the Minister for Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi, for his supervision of the project.
He said completion of the project will increase the capacity of Tanzania’s electricity transmission system and strengthen the availability of reliable and quality electricity services for citizens.
