Tanzanians across the country are expected to benefit from a more reliable electricity supply following significant progress in the construction of the 400-kilovolt (kV) Chalinze–Dodoma power transmission line, which has now reached 89 percent completion.

The 345-kilometre transmission line is scheduled for completion on August 21, 2026. Once completed, it will enhance the country's electricity transmission capacity by delivering power from major generation sources to areas with high demand, thereby supporting economic growth and improving the livelihoods of Tanzanians.

While inspecting the project on July 1, 2026, the Minister for Energy, Hon. Deogratius Ndejembi (MP), said the investment is crucial in ensuring that citizens have access to reliable electricity for households, businesses, industries, and productive economic activities.

He noted that completion of the project will strengthen the National Grid and enable electricity generated from the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant, with an installed capacity of 2,115 megawatts, to reach consumers and key sectors of the economy more efficiently.

"Reliable electricity means a better quality of life for citizens, growing businesses, uninterrupted industrial production, and improved delivery of essential social services such as healthcare and education," said Hon. Ndejembi.

He further emphasized that the Government will continue investing in electricity infrastructure to expand access to modern energy services, enabling more Tanzanians to increase their incomes and improve their living standards.

Speaking during the inspection, TANESCO Managing Director, Mr. Razalo Twange, said increased investment in electricity infrastructure has accelerated the connection of new customers, demonstrating the growing role of electricity in improving people's lives and driving national development.

He revealed that during the 2025/26 financial year, TANESCO achieved a historic milestone by connecting more than 800,000 new customers—the highest number ever recorded since Tanzania attained independence.

"Every new electricity connection creates new opportunities for business, improves children's access to education, enhances healthcare services, and increases household incomes. This is the true value of the Government's substantial investment in the energy sector," Mr. Twange said.

Earlier, the Project Manager, Eng. Newton Mwakifamba, said construction works are progressing well and remain on schedule for completion by August 21, 2026, in accordance with the contract timeline. He added that the project will mark a new chapter in ensuring reliable electricity access for more Tanzanians across the country.
