TANZANIA SET TO LAUNCH ITS FIRST IRON ORE MINING PROJECT AS MODERN EQUIPMENT ARRIVES AT MAGANGA MATITU
Modern mining equipment arrives at Maganga Matitu as strategic project raises hopes for jobs and economic growth
Tanzania is on the verge of making history in the mining and industrial sectors following the arrival of modern heavy-duty iron ore mining equipment in Makambako, Njombe Region, on its way to the Maganga Matitu Project in Ludewa District.
The arrival of the equipment marks the beginning of the implementation phase of the Maganga Matitu Project, which is being jointly undertaken by the National Development Corporation (NDC) and Fujian Hexingwang Industry Tanzania Limited (Fujian).
The project will involve iron ore mining over an area of approximately 19 square kilometres and the construction of an iron ore processing plant. It covers the villages of Mundindi, Ilininda, Shauri Moyo and Amani in Ludewa District and is expected to become one of Tanzania's major strategic projects, driving the growth of the mining sector, industrial development and the national economy.
Speaking after the arrival of the equipment, the Managing Director of the National Development Corporation (NDC), Dr. Nicolaus Shombe, said the milestone demonstrates the commitment of the Sixth Phase Government under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan to ensure Tanzania begins mining and fully benefiting from its iron ore resources.
"The arrival of this equipment is a significant milestone towards implementing a project that will transform the country's iron ore mining industry. More than US$70 million is being invested in this project, which will open a new chapter in the economic development of Njombe Region and Tanzania as a whole," Dr. Shombe said.
He emphasized that the project will mark a turning point for Tanzania's iron ore industry and stimulate economic growth in Njombe Region and across the country.
According to Dr. Shombe, Tanzania currently spends more than US$1.22 billion (approximately TZS 3.2 trillion) importing iron and steel products, making the sector the country's second-largest consumer of foreign exchange after petroleum imports.
He added that NDC will continue working closely with Fujian to ensure Tanzania's long-standing dream of establishing a large-scale iron ore mining project becomes a reality.
Mundindi Village Chairperson Steven Sapi Mlewa said local residents have welcomed the project with great optimism because of the employment and business opportunities it is expected to create.
"For many years we only heard about the Maganga Matitu Project, but today we are witnessing its implementation. The arrival of this equipment gives us renewed hope for jobs for our youth, improved social services and stronger economic growth for our community," he said.
Project Manager Engineer Wallu Kapaya said the Maganga Matitu Project is expected to become a major catalyst for Tanzania's economic growth by increasing the production of essential industrial raw materials, boosting government revenue and strengthening sectors that depend on mining activities.
He said the project is expected to create more than 1,000 direct and indirect jobs while also stimulating infrastructure development, including roads, social services, trade and investment in surrounding communities.
Mundindi Village Executive Officer Adrat Msigwa said the government has continued educating residents about the importance of the project and how they can benefit from the opportunities it will generate.
"Residents have shown great cooperation. We continue encouraging them to prepare themselves to benefit from employment opportunities, small businesses and the various services that will emerge as the project progresses," he said.
Residents Express High Expectations
Several residents of Mundindi Village said the project marks the beginning of a new era of development for the area.
Resident Jonisia Mlowe said many young people have been forced to migrate to other regions in search of employment, but now they have renewed hope of finding jobs closer to home.
"We are delighted to see the project finally taking shape. We believe many young people will now find employment here instead of travelling far from home in search of opportunities," she said.
Businessman Moses Mwakalinga said increased project activities would create numerous business opportunities, particularly in food supply, accommodation, transportation and other services. He expressed hope that young people from surrounding communities would be given priority in employment and skills development.
"As project activities expand, demand for food, accommodation, transport and other services will also increase, providing local residents with greater income opportunities," he said.
Project Expected to Be Completed Within Two Years
In addition to the arrival of mining equipment, other key preparations are underway. The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has already begun extending electricity infrastructure by installing power poles towards the site where the iron ore processing plant will be constructed.
Construction of the project is expected to be completed within two years, enabling Tanzania to begin large-scale utilization of its iron ore resources.
The Maganga Matitu Project is being implemented by NDC as the Government's strategic investment partner in collaboration with Fujian as the private sector partner. The investment is expected to make a significant contribution to the implementation of Tanzania Development Vision 2050, particularly in the development of strategic natural resources with substantial economic value.
Geological verification conducted at Maganga Matitu has confirmed the presence of approximately 101 million tonnes of iron ore reserves, making it Tanzania's second-largest iron ore deposit after the Liganga National Project, which contains more than 126 million tonnes.
The arrival of the mining equipment confirms that Tanzania's long-standing ambition of establishing a large-scale iron ore mining industry is finally becoming a reality, with Maganga Matitu poised to become a new centre for industrial and economic development.
The Maganga Matitu Project is expected to play a key role in Tanzania's journey towards an industrial economy by adding value to domestic mineral resources, reducing dependence on imported iron and steel products, increasing government revenue, and creating thousands of employment and business opportunities for Tanzanians.
