Tanzania's Minister for Energy, Hon. Deogratius Ndejembi, has expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of implementation of the 220kV Songea–Tunduru–Masasi Power Transmission Line Project, directing the contractor to speed up construction to ensure the project is completed within the agreed timeframe.
Speaking during an inspection of the project's progress on July 22, 2026, Hon. Ndejembi said the Government would not tolerate unnecessary delays in strategic infrastructure projects that directly impact the lives of Tanzanians.
He noted that the project is among the priority energy initiatives being implemented under the Sixth Phase Government led by President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, owing to its critical role in expanding access to electricity and driving economic development across southern Tanzania.
"The current progress of this project is not satisfactory considering the time that has elapsed since implementation began. The Government expects to see a significant increase in the pace of construction during the remaining implementation period. I have instructed the Permanent Secretary to closely monitor the implementation of these directives and ensure appropriate measures are taken if visible improvements are not achieved," Hon. Ndejembi said.
Representing the Ruvuma Regional Commissioner, Nyasa District Commissioner Hon. Boniface Magiri said the regional administration would continue working closely with the Central Government to monitor the project's implementation and ensure it is completed on schedule for the benefit of wananchi.
Speaking on behalf of Members of Parliament from the Ruvuma Region, Hon. Sikudhani Chikambo thanked the Government for its continued investment in electricity infrastructure, saying the project will stimulate economic growth, attract investment, and improve social services across southern Tanzania.
The 220kV Songea–Tunduru–Masasi Power Transmission Line Project is being implemented by Kalpataru Power of India. Once completed, the project will connect the Lindi and Mtwara regions to Tanzania's National Grid while significantly improving electricity supply in Tunduru District and surrounding areas.
