Minister Commends NBS for Making Statistical Publications Available Online

 Minister of Finance, Ambassador Khamis Musa Omar, has commended the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) for its ongoing efforts to digitize and publish its statistical reports online, saying the initiative will enable the world to access accurate and reliable statistics about Tanzania.

The Minister made the remarks during his visit to the NBS exhibition booth at the 50th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (Sabasaba), currently taking place in Dar es Salaam.

He noted that making NBS data available online is essential in the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI), as people across the world increasingly rely on digital platforms to obtain information rather than visiting institutions in person.

"Having NBS information available online is a great achievement and will help the world access reliable data about Tanzania. Nowadays, when people need information, they do not necessarily begin by contacting NBS directly—they often turn to AI. If the information is available online, they will be able to find accurate answers," the Minister said.

The Chairperson of the NBS Board highlighted ongoing efforts to develop a policy governing access to and use of official statistical information. Ambassador Omar welcomed the initiative, saying the policy would be developed jointly by NBS and the Ministry of Finance once the preparations are completed.

"We are currently preparing the policy on access to statistical information. Once the process is complete, we will present it to the Ministry for further action," he said.

Meanwhile, NBS Librarian Issa Magabiro said the institution is continuing to digitize all statistical publications, including historical records dating back to 1938.

He explained that many of the older publications still exist only in hard copy and are currently being scanned and converted into digital formats, while all publications that were already in electronic form have been successfully archived online.

Magabiro said the initiative is intended to improve access to Tanzania's official statistics for stakeholders both within the country and internationally, while also strengthening the preservation of the nation's valuable statistical records.

*Government Launches 15274 Hotline to Ease Access to National ID Information

Dar es Salaam: The Government has urged citizens to use their mobile phones by dialing *15274 to easily access information related to National Identification Cards (NIDA). Speaking today, December 29, 2025, the Minister for Home Affairs, George Simbachawene, said the service will enable citizens to check the status of their National ID cards, including whether the card has been produced or not, with feedback provided within five days. He explained that through this number, citizens will receive important information regarding their National IDs, adding that damaged ID cards are expected to be replaced starting February 2026. “By using this number, you will be able to get information on whether your ID card has been produced. I emphasize that damaged ID cards will be issued in February 2026,” said Minister Simbachawene.
