400kV CHALINZE–DODOMA TRANSMISSION LINE PROJECT NEARS COMPLETION
📌 Project reaches 94% completion
📌 Temporary power outages scheduled in selected areas to facilitate final stringing works
The Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) has announced that the 400-kilovolt Chalinze–Dodoma Transmission Line Project is in its final stages of implementation, with construction reaching 94 percent completion and the project expected to be finalized by August 21, 2026.
Speaking to journalists on July 28, 2026, TANESCO's Acting Director of Communications and Customer Service, Ms. Irene Gowelle, said that temporary power outages will be implemented in selected parts of the country to enable the completion of the project. The outages will be carried out in two phases: the first from July 30 to August 4, and the second from August 11 to 17, 2026.
Ms. Gowelle explained that the planned outages are part of preparations requested by the project's contractor, TBEA, to ensure that the final transmission line works are carried out safely.
"The project has reached a critical stage where some 220kV and 132kV transmission lines will need to be temporarily switched off to allow the safe stringing and connection of the new transmission lines. This is a standard procedure in the implementation of major power transmission infrastructure projects and is necessary to ensure the successful completion of this strategic project," she said.
She noted that some areas within the Central, Lake, Northern, Western, and Southwestern Zones may experience temporary power interruptions at different times, depending on the implementation schedule.
Ms. Gowelle added that TANESCO will continue providing updates through the media, social media platforms, and other communication channels to enable customers to plan their electricity usage according to the announced schedules.
She also emphasized that Tanzania has sufficient electricity generation capacity and that the planned outages are only temporary and intended to facilitate the completion of this strategic infrastructure project aimed at strengthening the national power transmission network. She further clarified that Dar es Salaam, Pwani, Lindi, and Mtwara regions will not be affected by the scheduled outages.
Meanwhile, the Project Manager for the 400kV Chalinze–Dodoma Transmission Line Project, Eng. Newton Mwakifwamba, said the 345-kilometre project, valued at approximately TSh 514 billion, is fully financed by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania.
He explained that the project involves the construction of a new high-voltage transmission line as well as the expansion of the Chalinze and Dodoma substations.
"During these final stages, we will undertake crossing and connection works at Mkambarani, Kikombo, and Mkonze. These activities are essential to ensure the project becomes operational safely and efficiently," Eng. Mwakifwamba said.
He added that once completed, the project will significantly enhance the capacity of Tanzania's national electricity transmission system and facilitate the efficient transfer of electricity generated from the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant to various parts of the country, improving the reliability of electricity supply while supporting economic growth and social development.
