Zambia's Permanent Secretary for Energy Commends Tanzania's Major Achievements in the Power Sector

📌 Highlights the implementation of the TAZA Power Interconnection Project and its regional benefits

📌 Praises Tanzania's efforts in promoting clean cooking energy

Zambia's Permanent Secretary for Energy, Mr. Arnold Simwaba, has commended Tanzania for its remarkable progress in the electricity sector, noting that the two countries continue to strengthen cooperation in implementing various development projects, including the Tanzania–Zambia Power Interconnection Project (TAZA). The project aims to connect the national power grids of Tanzania and Zambia for the mutual benefit of both countries.

Mr. Simwaba made the remarks on June 25, 2026, in Dodoma during a joint meeting that brought together representatives from the Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO), Zambia's Ministry of Energy, the Rural Electrification Authority (REA) of Zambia, and the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO). The meeting focused on exchanging experiences and discussing ways to improve electricity services.

He applauded Tanzania for making significant strides in the power sector through the successful implementation of numerous electricity projects. He also praised the country's efforts to promote clean cooking energy, particularly the use of electricity for cooking.

According to Mr. Simwaba, the continued collaboration between Zambia and Tanzania in the energy sector will enhance electricity access and accelerate the adoption of clean energy solutions for the benefit of citizens in both countries.

"This meeting is very important to us because we have come to learn and exchange experiences. Tanzania is doing an excellent job in implementing electricity projects and in raising public awareness about clean cooking energy. In Zambia, our approaches to promoting clean energy are somewhat different, which is why we are here to learn from Tanzania's achievements," Mr. Simwaba said.

Meanwhile, TANESCO Distribution Projects Manager, Mr. Christopher Mbwija, said Tanzania and Zambia are making steady progress in implementing the TAZA Power Interconnection Project, which is expected to significantly enhance regional electricity trade once completed.

He explained that the project will strengthen power system interconnections between the East African Power Pool (EAPP) and the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), creating greater opportunities for cross-border electricity trade and improving energy security across the region.

The delegation from Zambia's Ministry of Energy, the Rural Electrification Authority, and ZESCO conducted an official visit to Tanzania from June 21, 2026. During the visit, they toured several key energy sector institutions, including the Ministry of Energy, the Rural Energy Agency (REA), the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA), and TANESCO.
