TOSCI Provides Education on Identifying Fake Seeds

The Tanzania Official Seed Certification Institute (TOSCI) has urged farmers to utilize the institution's services to obtain comprehensive training on quality seeds and how to identify counterfeit seeds.

Speaking at the TOSCI exhibition booth at Chinangali Park during the ongoing Public Service Week in Dodoma, Seed Researcher and Inspector, Neema Yohana, said that the use of fake seeds has caused farmers to lose income due to poor crop performance and, in some cases, complete crop failure.

“The Seed Act of 2003 protects farmers from being sold low-quality or counterfeit seeds,” said Neema. She added that TOSCI is participating in the event to provide education to farmers, making it important for them to visit the booth and gain adequate knowledge.

She explained that farmers should consider several important factors when purchasing seeds, including buying seeds that are approved for cultivation in their specific agro-ecological zone and ensuring that the seeds are sold in original, unopened packaging bearing the company’s name and seed lot number.

Other key considerations include checking the crop variety, germination percentage, purity percentage, the date of laboratory quality testing, and ensuring that the seeds carry the official TOSCI certification label.
