Residents of Gairo, Mpwapwa, Kongwa, Chamwino, and Kiteto districts are expected to benefit from a more reliable electricity supply following the completion of major power distribution improvement projects implemented by the Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) at a cost exceeding TZS 10.5 billion.

The projects include a Power Distribution Switching Station, a 20 MVA Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) transformer, and a 92-kilometre 33-kilovolt power transmission line connecting the Zuzu Substation to Mbande.

Speaking during the inauguration of the projects on June 16, 2026, in Mbande, Kongwa District, the Minister for Energy, Hon. Deogratius Ndejembi, said the investment is part of the Sixth Phase Government’s efforts under the leadership of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, to ensure citizens have access to reliable electricity for both social and economic activities.

He noted that the projects have significantly improved the power distribution network in the region. Previously, faults occurring in one area often caused power outages in several neighboring districts.

“This facility has greatly enhanced the reliability of electricity supply. We sincerely thank Her Excellency the President for this major investment. In the past, challenges were significant, particularly during the rainy season when a fault in one district would affect electricity services in others. Today, we are witnessing the positive results of this investment for the benefit of our people,” said Hon. Ndejembi.

The Minister further emphasized that the Government will continue investing in the energy sector through strategic projects aimed at strengthening electricity generation, transmission, and distribution across the country to meet the growing demands of national development and citizens.

On her part, the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals, Hon. Subira Mgalu, said electricity projects continue to deliver positive outcomes for communities and contribute significantly to the Government’s development agenda.

“We are encouraged by the tremendous work being carried out by TANESCO to ensure Tanzanians receive reliable electricity services. In the past, these areas experienced frequent power interruptions, but the Sixth Phase Government has made substantial investments through TANESCO, and the results are clearly visible,” she said.

Meanwhile, the District Commissioner for Kongwa, Hon. Mayeka Simon Mayeka, urged residents and investors to take advantage of the improved electricity supply by establishing productive ventures, including processing industries, commercial enterprises, and other economic activities that will drive development in the area.

The Managing Director of TANESCO, Mr. Lazaro Twange, explained that for many years, Kongwa and neighboring districts depended on a single 33-kilovolt power line from Dodoma Municipality, a situation that created challenges in maintaining a reliable electricity supply due to increasing demand.

He stated that the completion of the projects has strengthened the electricity distribution system in the region and significantly reduced service disruptions.

“Previously, there was only one electricity distribution line serving five different districts. The growing demand for electricity and emerging investment opportunities began to strain service delivery. Since these projects became operational, we have witnessed substantial improvements, and the challenges that once affected electricity services have been reduced by more than 90 percent,” said Mr. Twange.

The completion of these projects is expected to further improve access to reliable electricity, create investment opportunities, stimulate economic growth, and enhance the delivery of social services in the districts of Gairo, Mpwapwa, Kongwa, Chamwino, and Kiteto.
