The 65-year diplomatic relationship between Tanzania and Russia is now being translated into a strong bridge for economic and social development, with the tourism sector taking a new strategic direction aimed at attracting international markets, including Russia.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan said she recognizes the vast potential of the Russian market and noted that Tanzania is ready to serve it by removing several barriers, including facilitating direct flights from Moscow to Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.
The President made the remarks while addressing representatives from 130 countries participating in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on June 5, 2026.
During the forum, President Samia announced that beginning July 2 this year, Air Tanzania will launch direct flights connecting Dar es Salaam, Moscow, and Zanzibar. The initiative is aimed at increasing the number of Russian tourists visiting Tanzania to 500,000 by 2030 and eventually reaching one million visitors.
The move comes alongside Tanzania’s recent international tourism achievements, with Serengeti National Park being recognized as the best destination in Africa, while Zanzibar received an award as a leading destination for conferences and leisure tourism.
President Samia concluded by emphasizing that the world is changing rapidly and that African countries are ready to grow through their own frameworks, such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). She stressed that Tanzania has opened its doors to innovators and entrepreneurs who wish to be part of this new journey of transformation.
