Putin Recognizes Tanzania’s Strategic Importance
By Our Correspondent, TBN, St. Petersburg
Russian President Vladimir Putin has described Tanzania as a key strategic gateway linking the East African market with international markets.
He further stated that, in a global economy that is increasingly shifting toward a multipolar economic system, Tanzania plays a significant role in promoting prosperity among different communities.
Speaking on June 5, 2026, at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, President Putin said that Tanzania is a strategic nation in East Africa, comparable to the role played by Uzbekistan in Central Asia, serving as a vital link between regional economies and major international trade hubs.
The Russian leader made the remarks while discussing countries that, due to their geographical positions and economic relationships, are emerging as important bridges between different regions of the world. He added that nations capable of aligning their domestic development with strong connections to new centers of global economic growth are becoming increasingly important as international trade systems continue to evolve.
These remarks from President Putin come at a time when Tanzania is rapidly expanding its transport infrastructure, including ports and regional trade corridors, to strengthen its position as a major trade hub for East and Central Africa and to translate its ambitious economic growth goals into reality.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan also participated in the forum, where she had an opportunity to discuss various issues related to investment and trade.
She emphasized that Tanzania is ready to cooperate with any country, including Russia, in advancing development opportunities for its citizens. Responding to a question regarding sanctions imposed on Russia, President Samia stated that Tanzania faces no such restrictions and works with all partners who wish the country well.
