Councillors from Mpanda Municipal Council and Nsimbo District Council in Katavi Region, accompanied by Members of Parliament and other leaders, have commended the Government for the significant investment made in the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP) after witnessing firsthand its operations and contribution to the development of Tanzania’s energy sector.

The leaders visited the power station on June 20, 2026, with the aim of learning about the substantial investment undertaken by the Government, understanding how the facility operates, and gaining insight into its role in strengthening electricity supply across the country. The delegation comprised 22 councillors, alongside several Members of Parliament and other leaders from Katavi Region.

Speaking after the visit, the Mayor of Mpanda Municipality, Charles Philipo, expressed gratitude to the Government for its continued efforts to strengthen the energy sector and thanked TANESCO for providing the leaders with an opportunity to tour the facility.

“We thank our Government for its commitment to addressing electricity challenges. On behalf of the councillors from Mpanda and Nsimbo, I would also like to thank TANESCO for arranging this visit and allowing us to witness the operations of this important project,” said Philipo.

For her part, the Member of Parliament for Nsimbo Constituency, Hon. Anna Mpembe, said she was impressed by the scale of the project and the level of investment dedicated to ensuring Tanzania has sufficient electricity to support national development.

“Today, we have witnessed a remarkable achievement through the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project. The way it has been constructed makes it an invaluable asset to our country, Tanzania,” said Hon. Mpembe.

Meanwhile, the CCM Chairperson for Mpanda District, Joseph Lwamba, noted that developments in the electricity sector have continued to transform the lives of citizens by creating economic and social opportunities across various parts of Katavi Region.

“I thank Almighty God that nearly all villages in our district of Mpanda now have access to electricity. Citizens are able to carry out their development activities through the availability of this power supply,” said Lwamba.

Explaining the purpose of the visit, Katavi Regional Electricity Transmission Engineer, Victor Ngw'igulu, said the leaders were brought to the facility to witness firsthand the major achievements being realized by the Government through the energy sector and to become ambassadors in sharing this information with the public.

“Citizens need to understand what TANESCO, through the Ministry of Energy, is doing. This facility provides a great opportunity to witness the progress being made in their country. Through Katavi Region, we brought these leaders here so they could see for themselves what they had previously only heard about regarding the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project, how it operates, and how it contributes to the national economy,” said Ngw'igulu.

On his part, the Acting Director of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project, Engineer Elinainyi Kalalu, said the visit would play an important role in enhancing public awareness about the significance of the project and its contribution to national development.

“We took them through various sections of the facility and showed them the infrastructure used in electricity generation. We believe they will regard this visit as a catalyst for development and become effective ambassadors wherever they go, particularly in explaining the contribution of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project to the nation’s development,” said Kalalu.

The visit provided councillors from Mpanda and Nsimbo, along with other leaders from Katavi Region, an opportunity to closely observe the substantial investment made by the Government in the energy sector through the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project. The leaders expressed satisfaction with the progress achieved and pledged to continue raising public awareness about the project's contribution to improving electricity access and accelerating economic and social development across Tanzania.
