KATAVI COUNCILLORS PLEDGE TO PROTECT ELECTRICITY INFRASTRUCTURE

Councillors from Mpanda Municipal Council and Nsimbo District Council in Katavi Region have pledged, in collaboration with local communities, to safeguard the infrastructure of the Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) to ensure uninterrupted electricity services for residents.

The leaders made the commitment on June 27, 2026, during a visit to the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant (JNHPP), which is located across the regions of Pwani, Morogoro, and Lindi. They commended the government's successful implementation of the project, describing the dam as a strategic national asset that requires a high level of patriotism to protect.

The councillors noted that the Sixth Phase Government invested substantial financial resources and effort to complete the project, emphasizing that all Tanzanians have a responsibility to protect TANESCO’s electricity infrastructure in support of the government's development goals.

Speaking on behalf of the councillors, Deputy Mayor of Mpanda Municipal Council, Hon. Nuru Abdalah, praised President Samia Suluhu Hassan for ensuring the completion of the hydropower project, which has a generation capacity of 2,115 megawatts. He said the project has fulfilled Tanzania’s long-held vision of achieving reliable electricity supply, a key driver of economic growth and improved livelihoods.

Hon. Abdalah also commended TANESCO Director General, Mr. Lazaro Twange, for his effective leadership and commitment to engaging leaders and the public in understanding TANESCO’s efforts to expand reliable electricity services across the country.

“I have witnessed the tremendous work being done by the government under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan to ensure citizens have access to reliable electricity. We will return home and educate our communities about the importance of this project and the need to protect it so that it can continue serving the nation for many years,” he said.

He further pledged, on behalf of the delegation from Katavi Region, to serve as ambassadors for TANESCO in promoting the protection of electricity infrastructure.

Concluding the visit, JNHPP and Infrastructure Manager, Eng. Erick Mwageni, urged the leaders to continue raising public awareness on the importance of protecting TANESCO infrastructure in Katavi Region. He emphasized that local communities living near electricity infrastructure are the first line of defense in ensuring its safety.

“Today, we hosted councillors and other leaders from Katavi Region who visited the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project to witness the significant investment made by the government in this flagship project and to learn about TANESCO’s ongoing operations following the successful completion of the project,” Eng. Mwageni said.
