JKCI TO EXPAND TO MWANZA, MAJOR CARDIAC CENTER TO BE BUILT IN THE LAKE ZONE
Residents to benefit as journeys to seek treatment in Dar es Salaam and abroad are expected to decline
The Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) has begun the process of expanding its services to Tanzania’s Lake Zone through a partnership with Sekou Toure Regional Referral Hospital in Mwanza. The initiative aims to establish a major cardiac care center that will serve millions of residents across the region.
The plan was discussed during a meeting between the Mwanza Regional Commissioner, Said Mtanda, and JKCI Executive Director, Dr. Peter Kisenge, where both sides explored ways to fast-track the implementation of the important healthcare project.
Speaking during the meeting, Mr. Mtanda said leaders from all regions in the Lake Zone support the initiative and are ready to collaborate with JKCI once official directives are issued by the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (TAMISEMI) and the Ministry of Health.
He noted that the investment will reduce the burden on patients who currently travel long distances in search of specialized heart treatment, while also creating opportunities for residents of the Lake Zone and neighboring East African countries to access advanced cardiac care closer to home.
For his part, Dr. Kisenge said JKCI decided to invest in Mwanza after identifying that a significant number of its patients come from the Lake Zone and Northern Tanzania, making it necessary to bring services closer to the people.
He explained that the new center will operate according to the same standards as JKCI, which is regarded as one of Africa’s leading cardiac treatment institutions. The facility is also expected to promote medical tourism from neighboring countries.
Dr. Kisenge added that JKCI is preparing a fundraising campaign aimed at raising more than TZS 5 billion to support treatment for 1,000 children with heart conditions, with part of the funds earmarked for the development of cardiac care infrastructure at Sekou Toure Hospital.
In addition to treatment services, JKCI will continue providing public education on the prevention of heart diseases in order to reduce the number of patients and improve overall community health.
