The Government has continued to oversee the implementation of electricity infrastructure rehabilitation projects across the country, with the rehabilitation of the Hale Hydropower Station in Korogwe District, Tanga Region, now reaching 83 percent completion.

During an inspection of the project on June 29, 2026, the Minister for Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi, directed the contractor to ensure the remaining works are completed within the agreed timeframe, emphasizing that the Government will not grant any extension to the project's contract period.

Minister Ndejembi said the completion of the Hale Power Station rehabilitation will improve electricity generation efficiency, strengthen reliable power supply, and stimulate economic activities in Tanga Region and surrounding areas.

"The contractor must ensure that this project is completed by July 31 this year as scheduled, so that wananchi can begin benefiting from a reliable electricity supply while supporting economic development," Minister Ndejembi said.

Meanwhile, TANESCO's Deputy Managing Director for Electricity Distribution, Eng. Timoth Mgaya, said the project is valued at US$24.81 million, equivalent to approximately TZS 64 billion, and has so far achieved 83 percent implementation.

"This project is worth US$24.81 million, equivalent to about TZS 64 billion. Implementation has now reached 83 percent, and we are working closely with the contractor to ensure the remaining works are completed within the agreed schedule," Eng. Mgaya said.

The Hale Power Station rehabilitation project aims to improve the plant's operational efficiency, enhance the reliability of electricity generation, and strengthen the supply of reliable electricity services to Tanzanians.

The Hale Hydropower Station is Tanzania's first hydroelectric power plant. It was constructed between 1961 and 1964 and has an installed generation capacity of approximately 21 megawatts (MW). The ongoing rehabilitation is intended to improve the station's efficiency and enable it to continue making a significant contribution to the National Grid for many years to come.
