GOVERNMENT WARNS AGAINST SABOTAGE OF ELECTRICITY PROJECTS, PRAISES REA'S EFFORTS IN EXPANDING ENERGY ACCESS

The Minister for Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi, has warned against corruption, negligence, and theft of equipment used in electricity projects, stressing that the Government will not tolerate any acts that undermine the implementation of development projects, particularly in the energy sector.

Minister Ndejembi made the remarks while addressing a meeting involving the Rural Energy Agency (REA), contractors, and stakeholders in rural electrification projects. The meeting aimed to assess the progress of rural electricity projects and was held alongside an awards ceremony recognizing contractors who have demonstrated outstanding performance in the implementation of electrification projects.

He noted that the Government is satisfied with the significant progress achieved in rural electrification and commended contractors who have excelled in completing projects on time and according to the required standards.

The Minister further highlighted that the Sixth Phase Government under the leadership of Samia Suluhu Hassan has continued to make substantial investments in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution. These efforts have increased electricity access to 85 percent nationwide and 78 percent in rural areas.

Earlier, the Director General of the Rural Energy Agency (REA), Hassan Saidi, stated that the agency is currently overseeing the implementation of 13 major rural electrification projects involving approximately 150 contracts. The projects are aimed at extending electricity to more than 17,000 hamlets and connecting over 900,000 new customers.

He added that REA will continue strengthening project supervision, providing incentives to high-performing contractors, and taking contractual action against those who fail to meet their obligations. He emphasized that the Government’s objective is not only to expand electricity access but also to ensure that more citizens are connected and able to utilize electricity for productive economic activities that drive national growth.

The Government has reiterated that it will not tolerate any form of sabotage or misconduct in electricity development projects.
