The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) has announced that the June to August 2026 cold season is expected to be dominated by moderate to severe cold weather in various parts of the country, while also warning of possible heavy rains linked to El NiƱo conditions expected between October and December this year.
Speaking to journalists on the outlook for the June, July and August (JJA) 2026 cold season, TMA Director General, Dr. Ladislaus Chang’a said the coldest periods are expected in July, particularly in the Southern Highlands, the Lake Victoria Zone and western parts of the country.
He added that northern coastal areas and the Northeastern Highlands are expected to experience relatively warm to moderately cold conditions, with some areas likely to receive off-season rainfall despite the dry season.
According to TMA, the rains are likely to occur mainly in the Lake Victoria Zone, along the Indian Ocean coast and in the highland areas of the Northeastern Highlands.
As a result, TMA has urged the public to take precautions against cold weather impacts, weather-related illnesses and possible heavy rains, while stakeholders in various sectors have been encouraged to closely follow regular weather forecast updates issued by the authority.
