TBS PROUD OF 50 YEARS OF ACHIEVEMENTS IN EXECUTING ITS MANDATE

The Director General of the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS), Ashura Katunzi, has said that over the past 50 years the institution has successfully established and managed systems for quality control and product safety in the country, a move that has helped improve productivity in the economy as well as the industrial and trade sectors in general.

She made the remarks today, May 15, 2026, in Dar es Salaam while speaking to journalists, noting that TBS has continued to be an important institution in protecting consumers’ health and safety while ensuring that products manufactured in the country meet nationally and internationally recognized standards.

She said that as Tanzania’s economy and market demands continued to evolve, the institution has expanded the scope of its services and become a key pillar in the industrial, trade, and economic development sectors.

According to Dr. Katunzi, TBS has achieved major milestones in various areas including infrastructure improvement, enhancement of laboratory expertise, strengthening the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), as well as increasing international recognition in standards-related matters.

She said these achievements have contributed to the Government’s goal of facilitating trade by helping local manufacturers access regional and international markets through products that comply with quality standards.

“Fifty years is a major milestone that deserves recognition, but it is also an opportunity for self-evaluation and setting strong strategies to further strengthen the implementation of the institution’s responsibilities,” she said.

She added that the Golden Jubilee celebrations of TBS will be accompanied by the launch of a special book highlighting the history of the institution, achievements attained, and its contribution to national development throughout the 50-year period.

Dr. Katunzi said TBS has prepared various events to mark the jubilee, including the Viwango Marathon scheduled to take place on May 23, 2026 at Leaders Club Grounds in Dar es Salaam.

In addition, the Viwango Business Forum will be held on June 5, 2026 at Mlimani City Hall in Dar es Salaam, bringing together industrialists, traders, investors, and standards experts to discuss how standards can promote business growth.

On the other hand, TBS will also organize a Golden Jubilee Gala Dinner to appreciate retired and current employees who have made significant contributions to the institution’s success.

The institution is also implementing community support initiatives through assistance to a hospital with special needs, while the climax of the celebrations is expected to take place on June 19, 2026 involving Government leaders, private sector representatives, and various business stakeholders.

Furthermore, she called upon different stakeholders to participate in the celebrations, saying they will provide opportunities for learning, building business partnerships, and promoting products and services.

By the way, how is the English style and formatting working for you? If there’s anything you’d like adjusted in future translations — more formal, shorter paragraphs, media-style wording, or anything else — I can adapt to that.
