TANZANIA CALLS FOR A UNIFIED STANCE TO PROTECT THE NATURAL DIAMOND MARKET
Dr. Kiruswa Highlights the Impact of Lab-Grown Diamonds

Tanzania has called on member states of the African Diamond Producers Association (ADPA) to adopt a united stance in protecting the natural diamond market against the increasing presence of lab-grown diamonds, which continue to affect the value and credibility of the global diamond market.
The call was made on May 20, 2026 by the Deputy Minister for Minerals, Dr. Steven Kiruswa, while speaking during the Council of Ministers Meeting of ADPA member states held in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The leaders discussed various issues related to the development of the diamond sector in Africa and the challenges facing the industry globally.
Dr. Kiruswa emphasized the importance of establishing strong communication and marketing strategies to raise consumer awareness about the differences between natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds, while also protecting the authenticity, value, and contribution of natural diamonds to the economies of diamond-producing countries.
He also stressed the importance of African countries working together to develop joint strategies aimed at adding value to minerals within the African continent in order to maximize benefits from the continent’s natural resources.
The meeting adopted several recommendations, including strengthening the proper use of international classifications that clearly distinguish natural diamonds from synthetic ones, as well as encouraging international diamond trade institutions to support such efforts for the benefit of Africa’s diamond sector.
Furthermore, the member countries agreed to strengthen their unity in addressing challenges facing the global diamond trade.
