TANROADS CONSTRUCTS 243 KM OF TARMAC ROADS IN 10 MONTHS

Minister for Works, Abdallah Ulega, has said the Government through the Tanzania National Roads Agency has continued to strengthen the infrastructure sector in the country by successfully implementing road and bridge construction projects from July 2025 to April 2026 under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Presenting the Ministry of Works’ revenue and expenditure estimates for the 2026/2027 financial year in Parliament in Dodoma today, May 20, 2026, Ulega said the Government has successfully constructed 243.13 kilometres of national roads to tarmac standard and rehabilitated 94.36 kilometres to gravel standard.

Ulega said the national road network managed by the Ministry of Works through TANROADS totals 37,734.41 kilometres, of which 12,225.26 kilometres have already been upgraded to tarmac standard.

He explained that when Tanzania attained independence in 1961, the country had only 1,360 kilometres of tarmac roads, while from the First to the Fifth Government Phases a total of 9,369.81 kilometres were constructed. He added that the Sixth Phase Government has managed to build 1,495.45 kilometres of roads together with 18 major bridges within five years.

“These are indeed major achievements attained within a short period in the road and bridge infrastructure sector,” said Ulega.

In another development, the Minister said the Government has completed the construction of nine major bridges, while construction of 11 bridges is ongoing and preparations for the construction of 13 more bridges are underway. He said the implementation of these projects has opened up various economic areas and enhanced efficiency in other transport sectors including railways, ports and airports.

Ulega said roads continue to be the backbone of transportation in the country because they reach more areas compared to other transport infrastructure systems.

He also said the Government continues to protect the huge investment made in the infrastructure by carrying out regular maintenance. Between July 2025 and April 2026, the Government conducted routine maintenance on 16,782.58 kilometres of roads, periodic maintenance on 1,101.12 kilometres, spot improvement works on 147.13 kilometres and maintenance of 1,383 bridges.

He said the move aims to ensure that road and bridge infrastructure remains durable and safe for users at all times.
