TANESCO OFFICIALLY LAUNCHES COMPENSATION PAYMENTS FOR RESIDENTS IN LINDI AND MTWARA

📌 More than TZS 5.1 billion allocated for compensation payments

The Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) has officially launched a compensation payment exercise for residents affected by the construction of the 220kV power transmission line from Masasi in Mtwara Region to Mahumbika in Lindi Region.

Speaking on May 7, 2026, in Kiwalala Ward, Mtama District Council, TANESCO Managing Director, Mr. Lazaro Twange, said the Government under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan has invested substantial funds in electricity projects, including transmission lines aimed at connecting southern regions to the National Grid.

He stated that more than TZS 5.1 billion has been allocated to compensate approximately 1,730 residents in Lindi and Mtwara regions who will be affected by the construction of the 220kV transmission line from Masasi to Mahumbika.

Mr. Twange added that 78 households in Kiwalala and Mahumbika villages will benefit from over TZS 253 million during the first phase of payments before the exercise expands to other villages.

Meanwhile, Lindi District Commissioner Ms. Victoria Mwanziva said the compensation exercise is intended to ensure that all residents affected by the project receive their rightful payments in order to facilitate smooth implementation of development projects. She urged residents to cooperate fully with TANESCO.

“We sincerely thank President Samia Suluhu Hassan for approving more than TZS 5.1 billion to compensate over 1,700 residents in Lindi and Mtwara. The main objective is to ensure the successful implementation of the Masasi–Mahumbika project,” explained Ms. Mwanziva.

The compensation exercise will continue in all 46 villages affected by the project across Lindi, Ruangwa, Newala, and Masasi districts.

The payment exercise has begun with 14 villages under Mtama District Council.

Implementation of the project is expected to improve reliable electricity supply for residents in the southern regions, who currently depend on electricity generated from natural gas power stations in Mtwara and transmitted over long distances.
