The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, has emphasized the importance of protecting workers’ rights and improving their welfare in order to boost productivity and national development.
Speaking during the national celebrations of International Workers' Day (May 1) held in Njombe today, President Samia said the government will continue to create a conducive working environment and ensure that salaries and workers’ benefits reflect the country’s economic realities.
“Workers are a vital pillar of our economy. My government will continue to safeguard your interests, including improving working conditions and ensuring your rights are protected,” said President Samia.
She also noted that the government will continue implementing reforms in various sectors, including health, education, and infrastructure, with the aim of easing work operations and increasing efficiency among workers.
In her address, President Samia urged employers to comply with labor laws, provide formal employment contracts, and ensure workplace safety is properly maintained.
On their part, leaders of workers’ unions used the occasion to present various challenges, including the rising cost of living, low wages, and youth unemployment, calling on the government to take further measures to address these issues.
This year’s May Day celebrations carried the theme: “Protection of Workers’ Rights is a Catalyst for National Development,” aimed at promoting equality, justice, and the well-being of workers in Tanzania.
The event was attended by various government leaders, trade union representatives, and stakeholders from the employment sector across the country.
