The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals has commended Oryx Energies for its significant contribution to Tanzania’s energy sector, particularly for providing employment opportunities to Tanzanians, who make up more than 90 percent of the company’s workforce.
The committee also recognized the company’s role in supporting the government’s efforts under President Samia Suluhu Hassan to promote clean cooking energy across the country. It noted that the number of clean cooking energy users has increased from six percent to 27 percent within a short period, with Oryx playing a key role in the achievement.
The committee conducted a special visit to Oryx Energies on May 9, 2026, in Dar es Salaam, where members received a progress report and witnessed major investments made in the company’s modern lubricant manufacturing plant in Kurasini as well as the Oryx Gas facility located in Kogamboni.
Speaking during the visit, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals, Subira Mgau, said the investments made by the company demonstrate how the government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan has created a favorable environment for productive investment.
She explained that the implementation of Vision 2050 and the current five-year development plan largely depend on private sector participation, estimated at 70 percent, and that Oryx Energies’ investments are vital in helping the government achieve its development goals.
She further noted that the committee had observed the company’s contribution to the national economy through taxes and other statutory payments amounting to over TZS 1.2 trillion, while also acknowledging the company’s commitment to employing Tanzanians.
Regarding clean cooking energy, the committee praised Oryx Gas Tanzania for the various initiatives it has undertaken to promote the use of LPG in the country. Members also expressed satisfaction with the company’s strategy, noting that despite ongoing global conflicts, Oryx has managed to ensure a reliable supply of cooking gas for households.
Earlier, Managing Director of Oryx Energies Tanzania Limited, Imani Mtafya, stated that over the past five years the company has invested more than 10 million US dollars in its lubricant manufacturing plant while ensuring that 99 percent of its employees are Tanzanians.
He added that Oryx Energies operates in four key areas: distribution and sale of LPG, supply of diesel and petrol, and production of lubricants, where the company is among the leading manufacturers in East Africa.
Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer of Oryx Gas Tanzania, Benoit Araman, assured members of Parliament that the company remains committed to promoting clean cooking energy and guaranteed that the country has sufficient LPG supply.
He also revealed that Oryx Gas is currently implementing a major expansion project for its LPG storage and receiving terminal in Kigamboni. The project is expected to increase the company’s capacity to receive large volumes of LPG, ensure adequate supply across Tanzania, reduce distribution costs, and improve operational efficiency.
During the visit, members of the parliamentary committee also witnessed the high quality of products manufactured locally by Oryx Gas Tanzania.
