NJOMBE EMERGES AS A HUB FOR RARE EARTH MINERALS, WITH CHINA AS ITS MAIN MARKET

The Government has announced that Njombe Region is expected to become a new hub for mineral investment in Tanzania following the discovery of two types of Rare Earth Elements (REE), namely Neodymium (Nd) and Praseodymium (Pr), which are highly demanded in modern global technologies.

Speaking in Mkiu Village, Ludewa District, Njombe Regional Mining Officer, Engineer Lucas Mlekwa, said exploration activities for the minerals are being conducted by Hongji Mining Co. Ltd in collaboration with local partners, while the major market for the minerals is China due to the rapid growth of its industrial and technology sectors.

He said REE minerals are used in the manufacturing of electric vehicle batteries, wind power generation equipment, and various electronic devices used worldwide.

“Njombe Region is opening a new chapter of development through these important resources, which play a significant role in the global green technology revolution,” said Engineer Mlekwa.

He explained that the company has already completed the first phase of exploration and is currently undertaking the second phase of detailed investigations before the commencement of official production in an area covering 280 square kilometers.

According to Engineer Mlekwa, more than one billion Tanzanian shillings has already been paid as compensation to residents who vacated the project area, while the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is in its final stages before production activities begin.

Speaking about the implementation of the project, Hongji Mining Co. Ltd Director, Yahya Mohamed, said the company has chosen to use In Situ Leaching technology, which minimizes environmental impacts by avoiding large open-pit excavation and underground mining activities.

He said the use of the technology will enable sustainable extraction while protecting the environment and surrounding communities.

“We want to see the people of Njombe becoming part of the success of this project through employment opportunities, business opportunities, and increased economic income,” said Mohamed.

The project is expected to increase the contribution of the mining sector to the economy of Njombe Region, stimulate new investments, and enable Tanzania to benefit more from the rapidly growing global rare earth minerals market.
