MINISTER ULEGA PRIORITIZES NEW EMPLOYEES FOR TBA HOUSING
Minister for Works, Abdallah Ulega, has announced that youth who have recently secured employment and those who are self-employed will be given priority in accessing affordable houses built by the government in Dar es Salaam.
Speaking during his visit to the construction site of 144 affordable housing units being built by the Tanzania Buildings Agency (TBA) in Temeke District, Dar es Salaam, Ulega said the move is in response to the challenges young people face in securing affordable housing.
“According to the 2020 Census, Tanzania faces a significant housing shortage. In light of this, we have decided to take deliberate steps to address this challenge,” said Ulega.
“These 144 housing units are here in Dar es Salaam. However, our President, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has also approved the construction of similar houses in Dodoma and other major cities to help tackle this issue,” he added.
Out of the 144 houses under construction, 72 are one-bedroom units with a living room, kitchen, and bathroom, while the other 72 are two-bedroom units, including one self-contained room, a living room, kitchen, and a shared (common) toilet.
Ulega emphasized that the program will be expanded to other regions as part of the government’s commitment to ensuring that young people access decent and affordable housing progressively and equitably across the country based on demand.
The Minister, who is also the Member of Parliament for Mkuranga Constituency in the Coast Region, noted that many young people—both employed and self-employed—are forced to live far from their workplaces due to a shortage of housing, which negatively affects their productivity.
He explained that by constructing houses in urban areas where there are more people and economic opportunities, the government is creating a conducive environment for youth to spend more time working rather than struggling with housing and transportation challenges.
Ulega also told residents who attended the event that the construction of affordable housing is not solely the responsibility of his ministry, but part of the government’s long-term development plans under Vision 2050.
