TANESCO Managing Director Mr. Lazaro Twange has expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of the contractor implementing the Hale Power Generation Station rehabilitation project due to delays in completing the project, which started in 2022.

Mr. Twange made the remarks today, May 22, 2026, during his inspection tour of the Hale project as well as the Pangani River dam desilting project located in Korogwe District, Tanga Region, where he directed the Hale project contractor to speed up implementation, including increasing the number of workers and extending working hours to ensure timely completion.

“I am not satisfied with the progress. The contractor has already requested an extension of time twice, and I have received information that they are in the process of requesting a third extension. That is why I came to see what is happening,” said Mr. Twange.

He said the project consists of seven implementation areas, of which two have already been completed while work continues in the remaining sections.

“I have spoken with the project supervisor, the consulting engineer, and the contractor, and I have directed them to work together to ensure that by the end of July this project is completed,” said Mr. Twange.

Regarding the Pangani dam desilting project, Mr. Twange said TANESCO’s expectation is to ensure that the work is completed within the planned timeframe in order to avoid challenges that may arise during the rainy season.

“Our expectation is not to exceed one year so that we can finish before the next rainy season,” he added.

In another development, Mr. Twange said TANESCO is currently implementing various electricity development projects across the country worth more than TSh13.4 trillion.

On his part, Hale Project Manager Eng. Kulwa Byemelo said the directives issued by the Managing Director will be implemented to ensure the project is completed on time.

“Once completed, this project will strengthen electricity supply in various districts receiving power from the Hale station, including Handeni, Muheza, and Korogwe districts,” said Byemelo.

The visit is part of efforts to inspect the implementation of various electricity projects, identify emerging challenges, and ensure they are resolved in time so that Tanzanians can continue enjoying reliable electricity services.
