Government Strengthens Fair Competition Policies to Attract Investment
The government has continued to create a conducive environment for investors by strengthening fair competition policies that promote transparent business practices, encourage innovation, and protect consumers.
This was stated today in Dar es Salaam by the Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Aristides Mbwasi, while opening the Tanzania Competition and Investors Law Conference, which was organized to discuss the role of fair competition in promoting investment and national economic growth.
He said Tanzania continues to experience strong economic growth alongside the expansion of industries and increased participation in regional and international markets, a situation that requires strong fair competition systems to ensure such growth benefits all citizens.
Mbwasi noted that competition policies have become an important part of economic reforms as they help businesses compete fairly, protect consumer interests, and encourage innovation across various production and service sectors.
“Tanzania continues to witness significant economic growth while industries expand and cooperation in regional and international markets continues to increase. However, it is important to ensure that such growth goes hand in hand with accountability and fair business practices,” he said.
He added that strong competition policies help build confidence among both local and foreign investors by ensuring markets operate transparently, fairly, and in accordance with established laws.
On his part, the Chairman of the Fair Competition Commission (FCC), Aggrey Mlimuka, said fair competition and investment are closely linked because investors require transparent and equal business environments to operate with confidence.
“It is difficult to attract investment in the absence of fair competition. Investors need assurance that they are operating in a fair market environment,” he said.
Dr. Mlimuka said the conference has created an important platform to discuss how competition laws can support economic growth in Tanzania and across Africa as a whole.
Meanwhile, the Acting Director General of the FCC, Khadija Ngasongwa, said competition laws play a major role in ensuring businesses operate fairly while enabling consumers to access quality goods and services.
She said the laws guide how businesses enter markets, set prices, advertise products, and compete, making them an important foundation for building a competitive and transparent economy.
Ngasongwa emphasized that enforcing competition laws should not be viewed as a barrier to business, but rather as a foundation for building investor confidence and ensuring sustainable economic growth.
