DC KILWA COMMENDS TANESCO FOR PREPARATIONS TO SUPPLY ELECTRICITY TO KILWA FISHING PORT
📌 Says the project is strategic with broad economic opportunities for the nation
📌 Urges contractor to complete power reception infrastructure
Kilwa District Commissioner, Hon. Mohamed Nyundo, has commended TANESCO for its commitment and readiness to ensure electricity is supplied to the Kilwa Fishing Port project, which is expected to significantly contribute to economic opportunities.
Hon. Nyundo made the remarks on May 6, 2026, following a visit by TANESCO Managing Director, Mr. Lazaro Twange, to the Kilwa Fishing Port construction site to assess whether the electricity reception infrastructure had been completed.
He noted that although TANESCO is fully prepared to supply electricity to the port, the contractor has not yet completed the systems required to receive power from TANESCO.
“I would like to congratulate the MD for visiting the project with your team of experts. You have witnessed the requirements that TANESCO is expected to provide, and we have also seen that the contractor has not yet completed some of the systems on their side to enable the reception of electricity services from TANESCO,” said Hon. Nyundo.
On his part, TANESCO Managing Director Mr. Lazaro Twange said the utility has sufficient electricity capacity, and a 33-kilovolt power line has already been constructed from Somanga to supply electricity to the fishing port.
He further explained that expansion works are ongoing at the Singino power substation in Kilwa, including the installation of a 5 MVA transformer aimed at strengthening electricity supply reliability in the area.
“Basically, TANESCO has enough electricity for the port. We understand that once operational, the port will require approximately 2.5 megawatts of power. We will supply electricity directly from our Somanga power generation station,” explained Mr. Twange.
Mr. Twange’s visit aimed to inspect ongoing electricity projects in the Coast, Lindi, and Mtwara regions.
