3,357 Journalists Accredited Through TAI HABARI System
By Our Reporter, Dodoma
The government has begun to reap the benefits of digital reforms in the media sector, with 3,357 journalists accredited within less than a year through the modern TAI HABARI system.
This achievement marks a significant step in strengthening professionalism, accountability, and regulation in the journalism field. For the first time, the sector now operates under an official digital system that enables efficient processing of applications and verification of qualified journalists in accordance with the Media Services Act.
Presenting the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports budget estimates for the 2026/2027 financial year in Parliament in Dodoma, the Minister, Hon. Paul Christian Makonda, said that from July 2025 to April 2026, the Journalists Accreditation Board (JAB) received and processed a total of 4,139 registration applications through the TAI HABARI system.
Out of these applications, 3,357 journalists met the required criteria under the Media Services Act, Cap. 229, and were granted accreditation.
In another development, Minister Makonda noted that JAB handled 14 complaints related to violations of professional ethics, indicating a growing level of accountability within the sector.
He further stated that the government, through JAB, has prepared a special legal guideline aimed at enabling veteran journalists who were affected by the accreditation system to re-enter the formal framework, in line with the provisions of the Media Services Act, Cap. 229, which was enacted to promote professionalism in journalism.
The guideline establishes a legal mechanism to recognize and certify their competence through a special assessment of experience, professionalism, and ethical standards, allowing them to obtain accreditation in accordance with the law.
This initiative aims to protect the journalism profession by ensuring that even highly experienced journalists are given an opportunity to be formally recognized within the legally established system.
