ZANZIBAR LEADERS HOLD SPECIAL PRAYERS TO HONOR KARUME
The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Hussein Ali Mwinyi, led national leaders, family members, and members of the public in a special prayer session in honor of the first President of Zanzibar, the late Abeid Amani Karume.
The prayers were held today, April 7, 2026, at the CCM Headquarters in Kisiwandui, Zanzibar, in the Urban West Region. The event was also attended by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, along with the Prime Minister, Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba, Fatma Karume and her family, as well as religious leaders from various denominations.
After the special prayers, President Mwinyi, alongside other leaders and family members, visited the grave of the late Karume where they laid wreaths in his honor.
Other leaders who attended the event included the Second Vice President of Zanzibar, Hemed Suleiman Abdulla, former President of Zanzibar, Ali Mohammed Shein, the Chief Justice of Zanzibar, Khamis Ramadhan Abdallah, the Chief Justice of Tanzania, George Masaju, Chief of Defence Forces, Jacob John Mkunda, and the Mufti of Zanzibar, Saleh Omar Kaabi.
This commemoration marks 54 years since the death of the first President of Zanzibar, the late Abeid Amani Karume, who passed away in 1972.
The prayer gathering also marked the conclusion of the national remembrance week dedicated to honoring past leaders of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, which is observed annually.
