PRIME MINISTER INSPECTS FIRE DAMAGE AT SIMU 2000 MARKET, ORDERS URGENT MEASURES TO RESTORE BUSINESS
States Government will issue statement after investigation
Orders new stalls to be allocated to genuine traders
The Prime Minister, Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba, has ordered immediate measures to restore business activities following a fire outbreak that destroyed the Communications Market (Simu 2000) located in Sinza Ward, Ubungo District in Dar es Salaam.
He made the remarks on April 6, 2026, during his visit to inspect the damage caused by the fire that occurred on April 4, 2026, which destroyed approximately 500 stalls belonging to small-scale traders.
Speaking to the traders, the Prime Minister said the Government is closely monitoring the situation and will issue an official statement after a thorough investigation directed by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, is completed.
“The President has received information about this incident, she sends her condolences and has directed that a thorough investigation be conducted so that we can determine the cause of this problem. That work has already begun so that we can establish the root cause of what happened,” he said.
Additionally, the Prime Minister directed that the market area be cleaned immediately to allow traders to begin the process of resuming their business activities.
“Director, when you leave here today as you conclude your day… by tomorrow this entire area must be cleaned. The cleaning exercise should be completed tomorrow,” he emphasized.
He further stated that the Government will collaborate with financial institutions to assist traders who had outstanding loans and lost their capital in the fire. This includes extending loan repayment periods and facilitating access to new affordable loans through local government authorities.
“Director, review the available funds for new loans… let’s prioritize those whose capital was destroyed so they can quickly recover,” he said.
In another development, the Prime Minister instructed that a bus stand area be included in the redevelopment plan of the market to improve business operations.
He also condemned the practice of illegal trading of stalls and emphasized that they must be allocated to genuine traders actively engaged in business.
Furthermore, he urged citizens to work together in maintaining peace and stability, stressing that peace is the foundation of all economic activities.
“It is essential for our country to remain peaceful. Every Tanzanian must be a stakeholder in maintaining peace,” he said.
On the other hand, the Prime Minister underscored the importance of respecting the private sector in driving economic growth, noting that it is the main pillar of employment for Tanzanians.
