MINISTRY OF INDUSTRY AND FCC CRACK DOWN ON COUNTERFEIT GOODS, MINISTER KAPINGA SPEAKS OUT

The Ministry of Industry and Trade, in collaboration with the Fair Competition Commission (FCC), has conducted a special operation in Dar es Salaam, seizing a total of 99,100 counterfeit products in the areas of Sinza, Kariakoo, and Pugu.

The operation, carried out on April 7, 2026, uncovered large-scale production of counterfeit spirits as well as fake lubricants, posing a serious threat to public health and the national economy.

During the crackdown, authorities discovered an illegal factory producing counterfeit Konyagi liquor in Sinza A, Kinondoni District, where 4,000 bottles (200ml each) and 250 empty cartons bearing the product’s branding were confiscated.

Additionally, other counterfeit alcoholic products, including Valuer Gin and Smartgin, were seized in Pugu, Ilala District, further exposing a widespread network involved in the production of illegal goods.

Regarding lubricants, more than 5,000 bottles were confiscated in Kariakoo. These were found to be filled with contaminated oil and packaged in containers bearing labels of well-known brands, posing risks to users and damaging machinery and motor vehicles.

Speaking about the operation, the Minister for Industry and Trade, Judith Kapinga, stated that the exercise is part of the government’s efforts to curb counterfeit products that endanger public health and reduce government revenue.

She added that, in addition to the seized goods, a total of 11,000 products from four companies have been removed from the market and are being held pending legal procedures.

“These products pose significant risks to public health and lead to rapid damage of machinery and motor vehicles, causing losses to consumers and the nation at large,” said Kapinga.

She urged the public to be cautious when purchasing goods by verifying quality marks through the ‘Hakiki’ system of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), while also calling on traders to operate ethically and formalize their businesses through institutions such as the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) and the Business Registrations and Licensing Agency (BRELA).

Kapinga emphasized that the government will continue taking strict action against producers and distributors of counterfeit goods to protect legitimate investors and ensure fair competition in the market.

She further noted that such operations are part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen the national economy by curbing illegal trade that threatens public health and reduces government revenue.
