Mbeto: The World Has No Doubt About Tanzania’s Form of Democracy

By Our Reporter, Zanzibar

The ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), has expressed confidence that Tanzania practices a strong and exemplary form of democracy under its leadership, citing its inclusiveness, broad citizen participation, and unquestionable transparency.

The party also stated that citizens’ criticism, contributions, ideas, and collective opinions are heard, implemented, and reflected within governance systems.

These remarks were made by the Secretary of the Zanzibar NEC Special Committee, Department of Ideology, Publicity and Training, Khamis Mbeto Khamis, during a Union dialogue organized by State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) through the Sheikh Abeid Amani Karume Academic Chair.

Mbeto praised the historic decision by the leaders of Tanganyika and Zanzibar to prioritize national interests by uniting citizens 62 years ago.

He further noted that the strength of Tanzania’s democracy is rooted in the freedom and welfare of its people, emphasizing the wide space for criticism, expression of opinions, and advisory input, alongside access to government responses.

According to Mbeto, only a few countries in the world practice a democratic system comparable to Tanzania’s.

“I have absolutely no doubt about our form of democracy in Tanzania. We have a thriving democracy that has gone beyond expectations. Today, some individuals even go as far as insulting leaders without facing consequences. It is a democracy rich in resilience, protection, and tolerance,” he said.

The CCM publicity secretary added that such a system of democracy is rare globally, attributing its success to political maturity, tolerance, nation-building efforts, reconciliation, and consensus.

Responding to a question about the party’s stance on drafting a new constitution, Mbeto stated that before the end of her constitutional term, President Samia Suluhu Hassan will ensure that Tanzanians receive a new constitution.

“When President Samia launched our party’s general election campaign at Tanganyika Packers Grounds, she assured Tanzanians that her government would deliver a new constitution,” he said.

Mbeto also emphasized that the new constitution agenda is driven by CCM governments, not the opposition, noting that all commissions tasked with collecting citizens’ views have been established by ruling administrations.

He added that the new constitution will incorporate citizens’ opinions and draw from the recommendations of past commissions led by judges such as Francis Nyalali, Joseph Warioba, and others.

Finally, he stressed that the constitution-making process will uphold national values, strengthen political stability, improve electoral systems, and involve key stakeholders in the development of democracy.
